Following an open letter to Donald Trump dated 24 December 2016, signed by thirty Iranians who claimed to have been former political prisoners prior to migrating to the West and which called upon the United States to launch a military attack against Iran (AhmadBatebi.com, 2016), and a subsequent open letter dated 6 January 2017, signed by fifty-five Iranians advancing the same demand (IranWire, 2017), this article interrogates the political logic, communicative architecture and epistemological violence embedded in what I term the ‘external liberation’ narrative, derived from a concept articulated in Bonhoeffer’s ‘Theory of Stupidity’ (Suren-Pahlav, 2014).

There is a further and more unsettling dimension that demands articulation without euphemism. When a society is persuaded that no internal avenue remains open, that every institutional path is irrevocably blocked, and that the only conceivable rupture must be delivered from beyond its borders, the structure of reasoning begins to resemble the logic that precedes individual self-destruction. Suicide is not, in most cases, an expression of strength but of suffocating foreclosure, a perception that all endogenous possibilities have collapsed into a single terminal act. The external liberation narrative reproduces this cognitive architecture at the level of the nation. It frames foreign bombardment as the only remaining exit from intolerable circumstances, even where that bombardment will predictably dismantle infrastructure, fracture territorial cohesion, and subordinate the polity to external strategic design.

 

To solicit such intervention is therefore analogous, in structural terms, to a collective act of self-harm. It is the transposition of despair into geopolitical form. A nation that invites its own bombardment in the hope of rebirth risks enacting not liberation but a species of political suicide, whereby the instruments of its destruction are legitimised in advance by its own appeals. This is not metaphor for rhetorical effect. It is an analytic claim about agency and consequence. Where sovereignty is relinquished as the precondition for emancipation, what follows is not self-determination but self-nullification on an enlarged scale. The tragedy lies not only in the violence inflicted by external actors, but in the prior internalisation of a narrative that renders such violence thinkable as salvation.

 

The argument developed here must not be misconstrued as strategic patience in the face of clerical authoritarianism. To reject foreign-imposed regime change is not to reconcile oneself to the Islamic regime, but to insist that its overthrow, if it is to generate democratic sovereignty rather than geopolitical dependency, must be enacted by Iranians themselves. A free and prosperous future cannot be delivered by bombardment draped in the language of ‘liberation’. It must be constructed through internally organised rupture, disciplined non-cooperation, and the reconstitution of authority on a domestically authorised foundation (Suren-Pahlav, 1999). The choice is not between dictatorship and foreign salvation. It is between self-authored transition and externally scripted disintegration.

 

History offers no evidence that great powers intervene for the sake of another nation’s civic maturity. They intervene to reorder strategic environments in accordance with their own interests, and they clothe that reordering in whatever moral vocabulary secures legitimacy at home. Whether the advocate of intervention occupies office under Trump or any subsequent administration is immaterial. The structural logic persists. Military coercion marketed as democracy has repeatedly produced administrative vacuum, securitised governance, and fractured sovereignty. To solicit such intervention is therefore not defiance, but the transfer of political agency to actors for whom Iran is a theatre rather than a polity.

 

For this reason, the external liberation narrative must be resisted not only because it normalises war, but because it prepares the ground for national devastation under the banner of emancipation. A society that invites foreign bombardment risks the destruction of its own institutional infrastructure, territorial cohesion, and civic trust. What is presented as salvation operates instead as a strategic trap set by external actors, within which certain self-appointed interlocutors, now recoded as moral advocates of intervention, function as instruments of its execution (Suren-Pahlav, 2013). A society that organises its own rupture preserves the possibility of continuity within transformation. If Iran is to emerge as a democratic, free, and prosperous polity, the Islamic regime must be toppled by Iranians through sovereign struggle, not dislodged by foreign force that will subordinate freedom to strategy.

 

However, to reject this narrative is not to defend authoritarianism, nor to minimise the brutality of repressive regimes. It is to insist that durable democratic sovereignty cannot be manufactured through coercive substitution. External actors may assist in widening civic space, protecting refugees, documenting violations, or imposing targeted legal accountability. They cannot export legitimacy as though it were matériel. Sovereignty that is imposed remains contingent upon its imposer. Sovereignty that is constructed through internal contestation, however protracted and fraught, acquires a different political density because its authority is reciprocal rather than administered.

 

The central contention of this study therefore stands without equivocation. The external liberation narrative operates as an information strategy that normalises war, infantilises political communities, and displaces the locus of political authorship. To solicit foreign bombardment in the name of freedom is not a radical extension of democratic principle. It is a concession to a geopolitical imaginary in which nations are positioned as wards awaiting supervision. When the fog clears, the choice is not between dictatorship and bombardment. It is between externally scripted dependency and the arduous, internally anchored construction of sovereign political order [2].

2 – A further political corollary warrants clarification. All of those who publicly solicited foreign military attack against Iran were previously active supporters of, the Islamic regime. Their political formation occurred within an ideological framework that subordinated national sovereignty to transnational religious authority and regarded pre-revolutionary forms of Iranian patriotism with suspicion or hostility. When such individuals are subsequently marginalised, persecuted, or expelled by the very regime they once defended, the rupture is not only political but personal. Disaffection under these conditions can assume the character of moral inversion: the same absolutism that once justified loyalty to an ideological state may reappear as uncompromising hostility towards it. Where political identity has been structured through totalising allegiance, rejection can generate retaliatory intensity. In such circumstances, calls for external coercion may express not merely strategic calculation but an affective desire to see the regime punished, even where the foreseeable costs would be borne by the erosion of Iranian territorial integrity and the suffering of its civilian population as collateral to a broader geopolitical realignment. The danger is not merely rhetorical excess. It is the gradual detachment of political agency from national accountability, a trajectory in which ideological absolutism is transposed into instrumental alignment with foreign power. In that transposition, allegiance is no longer anchored in the reciprocal obligations of political community but recalibrated according to external patronage.
