Introduction

'Beautiful Armada' (Suren-Pahlav, 2026), 'Epic Fury', and now 'Economic D-Day': the United States possesses a singular talent for christening its catastrophes in the language of heroism. These comic-book titles may gratify a domestic audience besotted with firearms, action-hero spectacle, and the sanitised fantasy of a clean cinematic victory; but intelligent observers beyond America's shores read the subtext with revulsion and unsparing clarity. Each new name is merely the latest mask for an unvarying underlying reality: American imperial failure, costumed in the theatrical rhetoric of resolve. This latest absurdity, 'Economic D-Day' (US Treasury Department, 2026), repeats the pattern of failure exemplified by its predecessors. As Trump's 'Armada' suffered nearly the fate of its Spanish namesake (broken and tattered), and his 'Epic Fury' curdled into epic failure, so now 'Economic D-Day' will conclude as the ‘Dieppe Raid’[1] did.

 

Yet the whole affair of this illegal war on Iran and the Iranian nation (not the Islamic regime) calls to mind the Persian proverb, as ancient as it is unforgiving, about the lunatic who drops a stone into a well from which a hundred wise men cannot retrieve it. The imagery is stark, but the political economy it exposes is starker still. The rock, in this instance, is the belligerent madness launched by the US and Israel against Iran on 28 February 2026; that war is now entering its sixth month, with no end in sight and no exit strategy worthy of the name. The well is the geopolitical and economic order that Washington once commanded with something approaching credibility. The hundred wise men (the diplomats, economists, and strategists who might yet salvage the situation) find themselves staring into a void of their own making, their hands empty, their authority hollow, and their credibility in ruins. At this stage, however, it is obvious that the US possesses many lunatics but no wise men. Its wise men have either been fired, silenced, or fear to speak out; the lunatics keep dropping rocks into the well.

 

The illegal war itself, which I termed the 'Epstein Fury' (Suren-Pahlav, 2026a) (a designation that captures both its sordid origins and its self-destructive trajectory), was never a strategic necessity. It was an act of adolescent grandiosity, a narcissist's performance by a deluded man and his administration that confused the projection of violence with the exercise of statecraft. Donald Trump, advised by a coterie of ideologues and Israeli lobbyists and pressed by Benjamin Netanyahu (who had spent decades thirsting for a devastating war with Iran), gave the order to attack. In my judgement, the Epstein files provided the necessary leverage and threat to compel this decision, despite explicit warnings from his own intelligence chiefs and military commanders.

 

The warnings were not ambiguous. They had been carried through war games years before Trump took office.

 

Six months later, the consequences of that decision are plain for any honest observer to see. The war has achieved precisely none of the US' stated objectives. The Islamic regime has passed from clerical rule to the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The regime's supreme leader, hardline as he was, has been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has taken hardline to an entirely new level. Iran has been devastated by a series of bombings by American and Israeli aggressors. Infrastructure and nearly 90,000 residential buildings have been destroyed; over 3,000 civilians have been slaughtered in cold blood, including 168 schoolgirls targeted in a deliberate massacre.

 

American bases in the region, once symbols of US military might, have been reduced to rubble or damaged; 18 American combatants have been killed, and the Pentagon reports that another 756 have been wounded. Yet the true number of dead and injured remains unknown.

 

But the true damage extends far beyond the immediate theatre of war. The US-Israeli aggressions have destroyed the very instrument that offered the most credible pathway to genuine change in Iran: the patient, disciplined application of economic leverage, coordinated through a multilateral coalition and combined with indigenous civil resistance (Suren-Pahlav, 2008; 2023). The Iranian nation, which might otherwise have celebrated its liberation from the very regime that the West brought to power in 1979 (Suren-Pahlav, 2010), now has no option but to endure the tyranny of the Islamic regime for the foreseeable future (Suren-Pahlav, 2026b; 2026c).

 

 

From the ‘Economic D-Day’ or expected the ‘Economic Dieppe Raid’

For over two decades, I have argued that the Islamic regime is endogenously fragile, its governing metabolism sustained by a finite circuit of foreign-exchange rents, parastatal extraction, and coercive patronage (Suren-Pahlav, 2008; 2023; 2025; 2025a). To sever these arteries through organised economic pressure – not through external violence but through internal non-cooperation and externally coordinated sanctions – was to accelerate a pre-existing structural decay. This was never a fantasy. It was a strategy rooted in the empirical observation of regime behaviour, grounded in the intellectual traditions of Arendt, Chenoweth and Stephan and other political philosophers, and tested against the historical record of other authoritarian collapses.

 

That strategy is now dead. And the so-called 'Economic D-Day', if not years late, is at least six months late. It is another rock dropped by the same lunatic into the same well, and the hundred wise men (the diplomats, economists, and strategists who might still salvage the situation) find themselves staring into a void of their own making. The reasons for its inevitable failure are not obscure; they are structural, cumulative, and, to any honest observer, entirely predictable.

 

First, the Islamic regime has accumulated over four decades of experience in evading, absorbing, and neutralising US sanctions. It has developed a parallel financial architecture, a network of front companies, a barter system, and a web of informal currency exchanges that render the formal apparatus of US Treasury designations largely performative. The regime has learned to live with sanctions not as an exogenous shock but as a permanent condition of existence, a fact of life around which it has built its entire economic and security apparatus. The 'maximum pressure' campaign of the Trump administration's first term did not collapse the regime; it taught it how to survive. The 'Economic D-Day' is therefore not a new strategy but a repetition of a failed one, executed with the same theatrical grandiosity and the same expectation of a different result.

 

Second, the US has, through this war, demonstrated to the world that it is an empire in accelerated decline. The image of American military might, so carefully cultivated across decades of cinematic and ideological projection, has been punctured by the reality of Iranian resistance. A country that cannot protect its own bases in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan; a country whose fighter aircraft are destroyed on their own runways; a country whose so-called Secretary of War (more accurately, 'the Secretary of Genocide') talks about 'no quarter' – this is not a superpower. It is a superpower in the terminal phase of its credibility. The world has watched, and the world has drawn its conclusions. The petrodollar system, long treated as the foundation of American hegemony, is being eroded not by a single adversary but by the cumulative effect of strategic overreach and humiliating exposure. The 'Economic D-Day' is announced by a state that has just revealed itself to be incapable of winning even the military component of its own war.

 

Third, the US has shown its true colour. It is “the Third Reich on anabolic steroids, dressed in the fraudulent language of liberty, sustained by the hypocritical piety of exceptionalism. Its technological supremacy and global reach allow it to perpetrate on a planetary scale what the Nazis could only manage on a continent.”  (Suren-Pahlav, 2026d; 2026e). It is bound by no international law and acts as a bully, kidnaps the leaders of sovereign states, invades nations without pretext, and then boasts about it. The language of 'rules-based order' has collapsed into the language of assertion; bombing can be discussed 'just for fun', the denial of quarter can be publicly entertained, and the killing of children can be rationalised without hesitation. This is not a state that commands moral authority. It is a state that has abandoned even the pretence of it. And when a state loses its moral authority, it loses the capacity to coordinate collective action. Sanctions depend upon multilateral cooperation; that cooperation is now impossible because no nation with any residual self-respect wishes to be associated with a regime that has so thoroughly disgraced itself.

 

Fourth, Trump has alienated the US' traditional allies, particularly the European Union. He has mocked them, belittled them, and destroyed half a century of the master–servant relationship that once bound Washington to its European dependencies. The Europeans, for all their complicity in this war, now see the US not as a solution but as a liability. They have opened their airports to American bombers and deployed their air forces to shield Israel, but they have done so under duress, not conviction. The 'Economic D-Day' asks them to impose costs on their own economies for the benefit of a president who has publicly humiliated their leaders and a Secretary of War who speaks in the language of extermination. They will not comply; they cannot comply. The political cost would be too high, and the strategic benefit too uncertain.

 

Fifth, the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, faced with the harsh reality that the US cannot protect them from Iranian retaliation, will not welcome these new sanctions. They have watched as American bases in their territories have been struck and American combatants have been killed. They have watched as Iran has demonstrated its capacity to strike at will across the region. They have drawn the obvious conclusion: Washington is not a guarantor of their security but a magnet for Iranian missiles. To cooperate with the 'Economic D-Day' would be to invite further Iranian retaliation against their own infrastructure. They will pay lip service to the sanctions while quietly maintaining their economic ties with Tehran, hedging against the day (which they now believe is coming) when the US is forced to withdraw from the region in humiliation.

 

Sixth, China and Russia, watching the US exhaust itself in a war that serves their strategic interests, have no incentive to cooperate with the new sanctions. They see American decline not as a misfortune but as an opportunity. China is deepening its economic and strategic ties with Iran, consolidating a position in the Persian Gulf that will outlast American influence. Russia is watching the US bleed itself dry in a conflict that diverts attention and resources from Ukraine. Neither power will participate in a sanctions regime that would damage their own economic interests and strengthen a rival that is already in retreat. On the contrary, they will actively work to circumvent the sanctions, providing the Islamic regime with the financial and diplomatic support it needs to survive. Additionally, the US cannot stop Chinese 'teapot' refineries from purchasing Iranian oil; these private operators have no international exposure and have mastered the art of concealment. China continues to receive 1.2 million barrels of Iranian oil per day, and no amount of sanctions will change that.

 

Seventh, the BRICS bloc now recognises that its moment has arrived. The war has exposed the vulnerability of the dollar as a reserve currency; the sanctions regime, by weaponising the dollar for geopolitical ends, has accelerated the search for alternatives. The BRICS nations, representing a substantial portion of global GDP and a growing share of global trade, are moving to establish a parallel financial architecture that bypasses the dollar entirely. China, Russia, India, Brazil, and South Africa are not merely passive observers of American decline; they are active architects of a post-dollar order. Iran also is now taking concrete steps to join the BRICS New Development Bank, formalising its integration into a financial architecture designed to bypass the dollar. The US is attempting to isolate Iran at the very moment Iran is deepening its ties with the institutions that will render that isolation obsolete.  The 'Economic D-Day' is therefore a rearguard action, a desperate attempt to shore up a financial system that is already crumbling under the weight of its own contradictions. It is not a strategy; it is a symptom of strategic failure.

 

Eighth, and perhaps most decisively, the war itself has inflicted damage on the global economy that no sanctions regime can repair. The Iranian response – attacking oil producers in the region and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz – has driven oil prices to levels that impose pain not only on the US but on the entire global economy. The 'Economic D-Day' would place further pressure on an already strained system, pushing oil prices higher, exacerbating inflation, and deepening the recession that is already visible on the horizon. The US cannot impose sanctions on Iran without imposing costs on itself and its allies; those costs are now so high that the sanctions regime is not merely ineffective but actively counterproductive.

 

Ninth, the internal dynamics of the Islamic regime have been fundamentally altered by the war. The regime that existed six months ago – the regime that could have been pressured into collapse through coordinated economic leverage – no longer exists. It has been replaced by a more radical, more securitised, and more entrenched formation, one in which the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has emerged as the undisputed centre of gravity. The sanctions that might have worked against the clerical establishment of 2025 are irrelevant against the militarised state of 2026. The regime has been radicalised by the bombs that have fallen on Iranian cities; it has been consolidated by the aggression it has faced; and it has been legitimised, in the eyes of its own population, by the very foreign assault that was supposed to destroy it.

 

Tenth, the so-called 'Economic D-Day' lacks the one ingredient that could make it effective: global unity. Six months ago, before the war exposed American impotence and American lawlessness, the US could have assembled a coalition of willing states to impose coordinated economic pressure on the Islamic regime. The Europeans would have followed; the Persian Gulf’s Arab states would have complied; China and Russia would have been isolated. That window has closed. The war has shattered the diplomatic consensus upon which effective sanctions depend. The US is no longer the leader of a coalition; it is the architect of a catastrophe, standing alone, surrounded by allies who no longer trust it, adversaries who no longer fear it, and a global public that has watched it bomb a nation of ninety million people and then claim the right to impose economic punishment upon its survivors.

 

Eleventh, and most fatally for the architects of this policy, the Iranians perceive these so-called new sanction as a continuation of war by other means. The US and Israel have spent six months slaughtering Iranian civilians, destroying infrastructure, and threatening to reduce the nation to the stone age. Therefore, Iranians see the sanctions not as pressure on the regime but as pressure on them, as yet another attempt by foreign aggressors to destroy their country. The hope that hunger will force Iranians to turn against the regime is a fantasy that collapses the moment one considers the Iranian experience of the past six months. They have watched their children slaughtered; they have watched their cities burn; and they have drawn the obvious conclusion: the threat comes not from the regime, but from those who bomb them and then claim the right to starve them. The IRGC, whatever its failings, is Iranian; the aggressors are foreign. And in the hierarchy of loyalties, that distinction is decisive.

 

When one puts all of this together, the 'Economic D-Day' is revealed for what it is: a joke, a sham, a theatrical performance designed for a domestic audience that still believes in the heroic narratives of American power, but a performance that the rest of the world watches with a mixture of contempt and pity. It will not pressure the Islamic regime. It will not liberate the Iranian people. It will not achieve any of the objectives that have been declared with such fanfare. It will fail, and it will fail not because of bad luck or poor execution, but because it is a strategy built upon a fantasy, a fantasy that the US still commands the power, the credibility, and the alliances necessary to shape events in its own image. That fantasy has been destroyed by six months of war. The 'Economic D-Day' is not the beginning of a new offensive; it is the last act of a tragedy, a tragedy in which the protagonist, having lost everything, still believes he is winning.

 

The historical precedent is the Dieppe Raid of 1942: a grandiose operation, launched with maximum publicity and minimum strategic coherence, which ended in catastrophic failure, exposing the limits of the power that launched it and teaching the adversary nothing except the weakness of its enemy. The 'Economic D-Day' will have the same fate. It will be remembered not as the blow that broke the regime but as the gesture that confirmed its survival. And the Iranian people, who might have been liberated by the patient, disciplined application of economic leverage, will instead endure the tyranny of a regime that has been saved by the very forces that swore to destroy it.

 

Yet failure, however comprehensive, is not the end of the road; it is the beginning of the reckoning. The question, therefore, is not whether the war has failed, but whether those who started it possess either the will to stop it or the wisdom to adopt a new approach, a sensible policy grounded in reality, not the Hollywood-style delusion upon which the current US administration has taken it beyond comic-book scenarios, deluding itself with hollow grandeur.

 

 

The Only Exit: Withdrawal and the Restoration of Internal Agency

The solution to this catastrophe is not complex; it is brutally simple. End the war. Declare a cessation of hostilities, withdraw American forces from the region, and permit the global economy to repair the damage that this belligerent madness has inflicted upon itself. The shadow of foreign bombardment must be lifted from the Iranian nation, not as a concession to the Islamic regime, but as a precondition for the possibility of any genuine change.

 

For as long as Iran is under threat from Americans and Israelis, the Iranian people will not rise against the regime that rules them. This is not a matter of loyalty to the clerical tyranny; it is a matter of national priority. When foreign aggression threatens the integrity of the motherland, Iranians do not ask who rules them; they ask only how to defend what remains. This historical constant, observable across millennia, has been demonstrated in the Iran–Iraq War of 1980–1988, in the 12-day war of June 2025, and in the present conflagration: internal political disputes are deferred, opposition is suspended, and the nation unites under a single banner, however reluctantly, to repel the invader. Trump and his advisers cannot claim ignorance. They were told by a faction of the Iranian diaspora, concentrated in the US (including Reza Pahlavi), that Iranians would welcome the bombs; these voices, amplified by Mossad's social media operations and echoed by captive think tanks such as FDD (and its offshoot NUFDI) that for years have tried to balkanise Iran on behalf of Israel, sold the administration a fantasy (Suren-Pahlav, 2021; 2025b; 2025c): that the Iranian people were merely waiting for American boots on their soil. They do not represent Iran. They are no longer Iranians. They are a cult of xenophilic traitors that sell the predator's grin for a promise of salvation to their former compatriots, and in doing so have bartered the sovereignty of their motherland for the privilege of licking the boot that kicks them (Suren-Pahlav, 2026f). The administration bought the lie because it wanted to believe it. But the lie does not survive contact with reality.

And so the aggressors have achieved precisely the opposite of their stated objective. Iranians did not welcome the bombs; they did not rise against the regime. The regime has not weakened; in fact the aggressors have rendered it indispensable as the protector of the realm.

 

The Iranian nation, having witnessed the systematic destruction of its infrastructure and the slaughter of their children, now regards the regime's missile arsenal not as a vanity project of the mullahs but as the sole shield against foreign dismemberment. The very weapons that the West demanded Iran abandon are now seen by the population as the guarantors of national survival. Iranians, who might once have countenanced the dismantling of the missile programme as part of a negotiated settlement, now view any such concession as national suicide. The regime, in a bitter irony, has been given the perfect alibi for its militarisation: foreign aggression. And the Iranian nation, having watched its cities burn, will not permit the regime to surrender its deterrent, because that deterrent is now understood, correctly, as the only thing standing between Iran and the fate of Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

 

The nuclear question follows the same logic. Iranians are now, for the first time, broadly supportive of a nuclear arsenal as a deterrence capability. This is not a triumph of clerical ideology; it is a rational response to an existential threat. The US and Israel have taught the Iranian people, through six months of bombardment, that they cannot rely on international law, cannot rely on diplomatic assurances, and cannot rely on the good faith of their adversaries. They can rely only on their own capacity to impose costs. And that capacity, in the modern strategic environment, requires a nuclear deterrent (Suren-Pahlav, 2025d). The regime may or may not seek such a weapon, but the Iranian nation will not prevent it. The lesson has been learned, and it cannot be unlearned.

 

Yet there is a truth that the architects of this war refuse to acknowledge: a free, democratic Iran, one that has no quarrel with the world, would have no need for missiles or nuclear weapons. Remove the threat of foreign aggression, allow the Iranian people to determine their own destiny without external interference, and the militarisation that so alarms the West would dissolve of its own accord (Suren-Pahlav, 2016). The desire for security is not permanent; it is a function of insecurity. Eliminate the source of the insecurity, and the demand for the weapons disappears. This is not a paradox; it is a political economy of defence that any honest strategist can read.

 

The path forward, then, is not escalation but withdrawal. Let Trump claim his hollow victory; let him declare that the war has been won, that the regime has been 'degraded', that the mission is accomplished. The rest of the world knows the truth, and history will record the lie for what it is. But let him have his fantasy, if that is the price of peace. Let the Iranian nation breathe. Let the internal contradictions of the Islamic regime, which had been generating a genuine revolutionary momentum before the bombs began to fall, resume their work. The regime is fragile; it was fragile before the war, and it will be fragile again once the external threat recedes. The difference is that without the war, that fragility is accessible to the Iranian people; with the war, it is fortified by nationalist solidarity.

 

The fundamental obstacle to this solution is not Trump, though he bears responsibility. The fundamental obstacle is Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli strategic preference, which has been consistent for decades: Israel does not want a free, democratic Iran. It wants either a crippled Iran, a chaotic Iran, or a destroyed Iran – Iraq, Libya, Syria, all over again, but on a larger scale and with a longer border (Suren-Pahlav, 2020; 2021a; 2024; 2025e). A sovereign, prosperous, and democratic Iran would be the gravest existential threat to the Zionist project that Israel has ever faced, not because it would attack Israel, but because it would expose the bankruptcy of the entire regional architecture upon which Israeli security depends. A free Iran would align with its natural neighbours, would not require the constant expenditure of resources on defence, and would serve as a model that would corrode the legitimacy of every autocracy in the region. Yet, Israel cannot tolerate this. It never has, and it will not begin now.

 

The only exit, therefore, is for the US to recognise that it has been used, that it has been led into a trap by a prime minister who cares nothing for American lives or American interests, and that its only remaining strategic option is to withdraw. Not to 'win'; winning is impossible. Not to 'negotiate'; the regime will not negotiate with a man whose word is worthless. But to withdraw, to stop the bombs, to allow the global economy to stabilise, and to let the Iranian nation take its own destiny into its own hands without the shadow of foreign aggression falling across its every decision.

 

This is the solution. It is not glamorous; it is not heroic; it will not generate the comic-book titles that gratify a domestic audience besotted with action-hero spectacle. But it is the only solution that does not end in catastrophe. It is the only path that leaves open the possibility of a free and democratic Iran. And it is the only way to ensure that the Iranian nation, which has endured the Macedonians, the Arabs, the Mongols, and now the Americans, survives this assault as it has survived every assault before it: not through submission, but through endurance.

 

The lunatic has dropped another rock into the well. And like the Dieppe Raid before it, the 'Economic D-Day' will be remembered not as the blow that broke the regime, but as the gesture that confirmed its survival. The hundred wise men, who might have retrieved it, are nowhere to be found. The path to salvation is not through more rocks, but through silence, stillness, and the restoration of agency to those who have been stripped of it. End the war. Let Iranians breathe. And let history deliver its verdict not on a nation that was bombed, but on a people who were finally left to decide for themselves.

1. The Dieppe Raid took place on 19 August 1942. Like D-Day, it was a major amphibious assault on the French coast involving predominantly Canadian forces, supported by British troops, the Royal Navy and the RAF. Unlike D-Day, however, it was an epic failure. Of the 4,963 Canadians who took part, 916 were killed and 1,946 taken prisoner; in all, 3,367 became casualties. British forces also suffered significant losses: 52 British ground troops were killed, while the Royal Navy lost 75 men killed or mortally wounded and the RAF suffered 62 fatalities and lost 106 aircraft. The operation failed decisively: the Germans remained firmly in control, much of the Allied armour never advanced beyond the beaches, and the surviving assault force was compelled to withdraw within hours. In that sense, Dieppe was almost the photographic negative of D-Day in Normandy: an Allied landing on occupied France in which nearly everything that could go wrong did.
