Abstract

This article advances a direct claim: what is often presented as political opposition within the contemporary Iranian condition is, on closer inspection, structured by a displacement of agency that renders both regime and opposition complicit in the erosion of national autonomy. It is often assumed that the binary of ‘Islamic regime’ versus ‘opposition’ provides an adequate framework of analysis, yet this obscures more than it reveals. What appears as opposition is, in decisive instances, not resistance but reorientation; reorientation towards external centres of power that are tacitly installed as arbiters of legitimacy.

 

The argument proceeds by identifying the convergence of two phenomena – xenophilia and cultural self-contempt – not as rhetorical designations, but as analytic categories necessary to grasp a deeper structural condition. Xenophilia, in this precise sense, is not openness to the external world, but a disordered attachment that confers a priori authority upon it; cultural self-contempt is not critique, but negation, negation that collapses the distinction between critical engagement and wholesale devaluation. Together, they produce not plurality, but dependency; dependency that presents itself as liberation.

 

This condition cannot be attributed solely to the Islamic regime, nor exclusively to the dynamics of exile. It emerges, rather, through their convergence. The regime’s sustained reconfiguration of national identity within a transnational Islamic imaginary displaces historically grounded forms of identification, while exilic dislocation (structured through adaptation, recognition, and alignment) reconstitutes subjectivity in relation to external frameworks of power. What results is not fragmentation in any ordinary sense, but estrangement; estrangement through which the Iranian subject ceases to function as the locus of political meaning and is instead positioned as its object.

 

At the level of consciousness, this structural condition assumes the form of derivative reasoning. Judgement is not exercised, but deferred; deferred to external actors, narratives, and systems of validation. This produces not analysis, but alignment; alignment that erodes the distinction between national interest and external agenda. Within such a configuration, calls for foreign intervention, including those framed as ‘external liberation’, must be recognised for what they are: not strategic positions, but the logical culmination of a politics that has relinquished its own ground.

 

The article concludes that the convergence of xenophilia and cultural self-contempt constitutes not merely a cultural tendency, but a structural impediment to national reconstruction. A political community that locates its horizon of legitimacy beyond itself does not simply weaken its sovereignty; it abandons the conditions under which sovereignty might be constituted at all.

 

 

Introduction

In mid-2016, I intervened in a short polemical article in Persian on the rise of xenophilia among Iranians (Suren-Pahlav, 2016a), and within months, in December of that same year, a group claiming opposition to the Islamic regime issued a statement that amounted, in substance if not in euphemism, to a call for the bombing of Iran. This was not merely an instance of rhetorical excess; it was an articulation of a political logic that I named ‘external liberation’, a term that does not describe but fixes the operative rationale (Suren-Pahlav, 2016b).

 

The question that follows is neither rhetorical nor avoidable. What appears as a marginal or aberrant position is, on closer inspection, symptomatic of a deeper condition. What relation binds xenophilia to the emergence of political actors who, in calling for foreign violence against their own country, cross not simply a moral line, but the threshold into a form of conduct that must be named, without mitigation, as ‘traitorous’?

 

The contemporary Iranian condition cannot be captured by the exhausted binary of ‘regime’ versus ‘opposition’; this binary obscures more than it reveals. It is often assumed that exile preserves an uncorrupted national consciousness awaiting return, yet this overlooks the extent to which exile (as process, not merely condition) reconstitutes political subjectivity. What asserts itself instead is a disquieting formation in which the Islamic regime and the dynamics of exilic dispersal, through distinct yet convergent mechanisms, produce a fractured subjectivity. This is not a coherent national self, but a divided one; a subject oscillating between xenophilia and cultural self-contempt, each misrecognised as awareness, each functioning as estrangement.

 

Iran today is not simply governed by a state that has, with sustained intent, displaced pre-existing forms of national identity in favour of a transnational Islamic imaginary; this is only one side of the equation. It is mirrored by a diaspora whose response to that displacement has not been reconstruction, but inversion. Opposition becomes attachment, attachment to external powers, external narratives, external validation; validation that is sought, and then mistaken for legitimacy. This is not resistance, but dependency; dependency that presents itself as liberation. Nor is this condition confined to those formed through exile by persecution and displacement. It is reproduced, and actively reproduced, by regime ‘manufactured oppositions’ operating abroad, which do not function as alternatives but as extensions, extensions that replicate the same structures of control, manipulation and dependency under the guise of dissent. The distinction between regime and opposition is thereby not sustained, but collapses into variant expressions of a shared pathology (Suren-Pahlav, 2011).

 

The language of ‘xenophilia’ and ‘cultural cringe’ is not rhetorical embellishment; it is an analytic necessity. It is often claimed that such orientations reflect cosmopolitanism or strategic alignment, yet this cannot be sustained. Xenophilia, in this precise sense, is not openness to the external world (which remains both inevitable and, in principle, desirable); it is a disordered attachment in which the foreign is endowed with a priori superiority, while the national is rendered intrinsically suspect. Cultural self-contempt follows as its corollary. This is not critique, but negation; negation that collapses the distinction between necessary political criticism and the wholesale devaluation of historical and cultural inheritance.

 

What must therefore be confronted is not simply a regime that has instrumentalised religion to reconfigure identity, nor merely a diaspora negotiating displacement. Such formulations are inadequate. What is at stake is a more corrosive process through which the Iranian subject, within and beyond the territorial state, is constituted in relation to external centres of power (regional actors, global powers, media systems that mediate reality itself). The nation, in this configuration, ceases to function as the primary horizon of political meaning. It becomes instead an object, an object to be spoken for, intervened upon, and ultimately redeemed by others.

 

This argument proceeds from a position that will not be obscured. The convergence of xenophilia and cultural self-contempt is not simply regrettable; it is structurally disabling. It does not merely distort political judgement; it incapacitates it. A society that locates its salvation in the will, recognition, or intervention of external actors has already relinquished the ground upon which sovereignty might be constituted, and in doing so, it abandons the very conditions of autonomous political judgement.

 

What follows, therefore, is not an exercise in balance, nor an attempt to distribute blame across competing factions. Such symmetry would be misleading. It is, rather, a diagnosis of a condition that implicates both the Islamic regime and significant currents within its opposition, particularly in exile, in the production of a nation estranged from itself. The question that remains is not rhetorical, and not avoidable: if both state and opposition converge in displacing the locus of political agency beyond the nation, what is presented as liberation is, in fact, the reproduction of subordination.

 

 

A Nation Divided Against Itself: The Normalisation of External Reference

A decisive feature of the present Iranian condition lies in the normalisation of appeals to external authority. This is not confined to a single domain; it is observable across state discourse, diasporic activism, and digital communication alike. What appears, at first glance, as fragmentation is, on closer inspection, a reorganisation of political orientation. Legitimacy, judgement, and even political imagination are no longer grounded within the horizon of the nation, but are persistently directed towards external centres of power (regional proxies, global actors, transnational media systems that mediate reality itself). This is not simply dispersion; it is a displacement of political agency.

 

Within the Islamic regime, this outward orientation is not incidental; it is doctrinal. It is often claimed that the regime’s transnational posture is strategic, yet this overlooks its theological grounding in a supra-national Islamic imaginary that displaces the nation as the primary referent of political meaning. Iranian historical consciousness is subordinated to a project that exceeds territorial and cultural specificity (Suren-Pahlav, 2013). Yet this is only one side of the problem. What demands sharper scrutiny is the parallel movement within segments of the opposition, particularly in exile, where the language of resistance increasingly converges with appeals for foreign intervention, endorsement, and validation. This is not opposition in any substantive sense; it is the reorientation of opposition towards external authority. Across both formations, the nation ceases to function as subject and is reduced to object.

 

This condition is not episodic, nor is it superficial; it is structurally reproduced. The formation of the Iranian diaspora over the past five decades has generated heterogeneous communities whose identities are not preserved, but reconstituted. It is often assumed that national consciousness persists intact in exile, yet this cannot be sustained. Diasporic identity (as the literature has long established) is hybrid, negotiated, and unstable, shaped by the interplay between memory and the demands of the host society (Hall, 1990; Naficy, 1999). What follows is not continuity, but transformation; transformation that privileges adaptation, recognition, and acceptance within external frameworks of power.

 

From this emerges a paradox that political discourse persistently refuses to confront. Spaces imagined as sites of liberation from the ideological constraints of the Islamic regime function simultaneously as sites of dependency. This is not dependency imposed through coercion; it is dependency internalised, internalised through the adoption of hierarchies that install the ‘West’ as the implicit standard of political legitimacy and cultural value. What appears as strategic alignment is, on closer inspection, a reconfiguration of subjectivity, in which the Iranian self is articulated through the gaze of the other.

 

These dynamics become most visible within mediated communication. Digital platforms used by Iranians inside and outside the country are not neutral arenas of expression; they are structured environments in which narratives are shaped, amplified, and manipulated by state and non-state actors alike. The resulting discursive field is organised through algorithmic reinforcement, external influence, and factional polarisation. Within this field, alignment with external powers is not merely present; it is normalised, aestheticised, and rewarded with visibility. This does not simply blur the line between analysis and advocacy; it collapses it, and in doing so, it erodes the distinction between national interest and external alignment.

 

At the level of everyday discourse, this condition assumes recognisable, and increasingly dominant, forms. Foreign political figures are elevated not as objects of strategic evaluation, but as figures of identification; identification that substitutes for judgement. Narratives produced by external media institutions are circulated uncritically, while domestic cultural and historical forms are reflexively denigrated as inherently deficient. Political change is framed not as a matter of internal transformation, but as contingent upon external intervention. These are not marginal tendencies; they define the grammar of political articulation across significant segments of both the domestic and diasporic public sphere.

 

These patterns must not be dismissed as distortions. They are symptoms, symptoms of a deeper displacement in which the capacity for autonomous political judgement is progressively eroded. What replaces it is not pluralism, but derivation; a mode of reasoning that seeks validation beyond itself. Xenophilia and cultural self-contempt are therefore not abstract cultural tendencies. They are operative conditions, conditions that structure perception, organise alliances, and delimit the horizon of the possible.

 

To describe this situation in the language of ‘polarisation’ or ‘fragmentation’ is not simply inadequate; it is misleading. What is at stake is not division within a national body, but the hollowing out of that body as a site of meaning. The nation no longer functions as the locus of political agency; it becomes instead a surface upon which external forces, narratives, and expectations are inscribed. The question that follows is not rhetorical: if the Iranian subject no longer recognises itself as the origin of political action, but only as its object, what remains of sovereignty other than its simulation?

 

 

The Production of Estrangement: State Ideology and Exilic Dislocation

If the present condition is to be taken seriously, it cannot be reduced to moral failure, generational decline, or the familiar lament over a ‘loss of values’. Such explanations are not simply insufficient; they obscure the mechanisms at work. What is required is a different framing. The condition must be located within a dual process of production, in which the Islamic regime, on the one hand, and the structural realities of exile, on the other, converge, not by design, but with cumulative effect. This convergence produces a condition that must be named precisely: estrangement, estrangement through which the Iranian subject is displaced from itself.

 

The role of the Islamic regime in this process is not incidental, nor is it adequately captured by the language of repression. Since its inception in 1979, shaped through the intervention of external powers including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Israel (Suren-Pahlav, 2000), it has pursued not merely the consolidation of political authority, but the reconstitution of national identity. This is not a neutral transformation; it is a deliberate privileging of a transnational Islamic framework over a historically grounded Iranian consciousness. Symbolic hierarchies are reordered, reordered in ways that marginalise, recode, and render ideologically suspect pre-Islamic and national referents (Keddie, 2003). This is not simply governance; it is ideological reconfiguration, embedded across institutions, education, and public discourse. The ‘nation’ is not erased outright; it is subordinated, subordinated to an imagined community that exceeds territorial and historical specificity.

 

Such a project does not simply erase; it dislocates. By destabilising inherited forms of identification without producing a viable and internally coherent alternative, the state generates subjects who are neither fully integrated into its ideological framework nor able to recover an unmediated relation to the past it has delegitimised. This is not a transitional instability; it is a condition of permanent suspension. Identity does not consolidate, but fragments; fragments into forms that are contingent, reactive, and open to external inscription. Within such a condition, xenophilic attachment is not an anomaly; it is a compensatory response.

 

Yet to attribute this condition solely to the Islamic regime is not simply incomplete; it is politically convenient. The second vector, exilic dislocation, must be understood as an active process of reconfiguration. Large-scale Iranian migration, particularly in the aftermath of the revolution and its consequences, has produced diasporic formations embedded within host societies structured by asymmetrical power relations. Within these formations, recognition, mobility, and inclusion are mediated through processes of cultural adaptation and symbolic alignment (Vertovec, 2009; Anthias, 2013). This is not neutral adaptation; it is structured adjustment. Identity negotiation becomes conditioned by implicit hierarchies that privilege the norms, values, and political imaginaries of the host environment.

 

Within this configuration, the repudiation of the Islamic regime, which remains a legitimate and often necessary political position, does not remain contained. It becomes entangled with a broader reorientation. The ‘West’ is not simply engaged as a geopolitical actor; it is internalised as a normative horizon against which the self is measured and recalibrated. This is the critical shift. What appears as opposition is, on closer inspection, inversion; inversion through which the rejection of one imposed identity does not yield autonomy, but gives way to the adoption of another external frame of reference. This is not liberation; it is substitution, substitution that operates with comparable force, if greater subtlety.

 

The interaction between these processes, ideological dislocation within the state and adaptive reconfiguration within exile, does not produce balance. It produces reinforcement. The result is not correction, but a feedback loop, a loop that intensifies estrangement. The state’s denigration of national identity pushes segments of the population towards external points of identification, while diasporic internalisation of external norms reinforces modes of critique that reproduce the very displacement they claim to resist. What appears as a stark opposition between ‘Islamic regime loyalists’ and ‘diasporic opposition’ is therefore misleading. It conceals a deeper convergence, convergence in which both are implicated in relocating political meaning beyond the nation.

 

This convergence is further amplified through transnational media circuits. These do not merely transmit information; they structure perception. They generate continuous flows of representations, narratives, and affective cues that configure what can be seen, and how it can be interpreted. Regimes of visibility are established in which positions aligned with dominant global narratives acquire legitimacy, while others are marginalised or rendered unintelligible (Appadurai, 1996; Sakr, 2007). This does not simply blur the boundary between internal and external discourse; it dissolves it. The distinction between autonomous judgement and mediated consensus becomes not only unstable, but increasingly untenable.

 

The consequence of this dual production is not fragmentation in any ordinary sense. Such a description is inadequate. What is produced is incapacity, incapacity in the precise sense that the conditions necessary for autonomous political articulation are eroded. When the categories through which a society understands itself are delegitimised from above and displaced from without, the possibility of generating an internally grounded political project is not merely weakened; it is structurally constrained. What remains is not pluralism, but competition, competition among external alignments within which actors position themselves according to the logics of validation, recognition, and power.

 

It is at this point that xenophilia and cultural self-contempt must be understood correctly. They are not isolated cultural pathologies; they are the subjective expressions of a structurally produced condition. They are the forms through which estrangement is lived, rationalised, and reproduced. They provide the affective and cognitive architecture of a politics that no longer proceeds from its own ground. The question that follows is not rhetorical: if estrangement is produced through the combined operations of state ideology and exilic adaptation, what possibility remains for a political subject capable of relating to itself without mediation?

 

 

Xenophilia and Cultural Self-Contempt: A Diagnosis of Derivative Consciousness

If the preceding analysis has established the conditions under which estrangement is produced, what must now be confronted is the form it assumes at the level of consciousness. This is not a secondary effect; it is the site at which structure is internalised. Structural dislocation is translated into patterned habits of thought, perception, and judgement that do not merely reflect estrangement, but reproduce it. Xenophilia and cultural self-contempt must therefore be named with precision. They are not attitudes, nor preferences; they are a mode of reasoning, a mode in which the hierarchy between self and other is fixed in advance, granting the foreign an assumed authority while rendering the national intrinsically deficient.

 

Xenophilia, properly defined, is not openness, nor is it strategic engagement. Such conflations are misleading. Both openness and engagement remain necessary to any functioning polity, yet xenophilia is something else entirely. It is a disordered attachment in which the foreign is endowed with epistemic and moral superiority prior to evaluation. This does not simply bias judgement; it forecloses it. What follows is not assessment, but deference; deference that is anticipatory in form and structural in effect. Validation is sought not through argument or institutional legitimacy, but through proximity to external centres of power. This is not an abstract tendency. It manifests concretely in the uncritical elevation of foreign political figures, the rapid internalisation of externally produced narratives, and the reflexive alignment with positions whose relevance to the Iranian condition remains unexamined.

 

This formation is not merely semantic; it is structural. Xenophilia, in isolation, does not inevitably produce betrayal, nor does it automatically generate disloyalty. Yet within a condition marked by weakened internal identification and sustained exposure to external centres of power, it becomes entangled with dependency. This is not metaphorical dependency, but a political-economic configuration in which reliance on external actors for legitimacy, resources, or validation reorients political judgement away from the internal horizon and towards external agendas (Vertovec, 2009; Anthias, 2013). The decisive issue is therefore not whether the foreign is admired. It is whether evaluative frameworks have been so reconstituted that alignment with external interests appears not as compromise, but as necessity. At that point, xenophilia ceases to function as disposition and becomes a vector of political realignment, eroding the distinction between national interest and external agenda.

 

Its corollary, cultural self-contempt, must be understood with equal precision. It is often misrecognised as critique, yet this cannot be sustained. Where critique presupposes an engaged relation to historical and cultural inheritance, self-contempt dissolves that relation. This is not interrogation; it is negation, negation that collapses the distinction between analysis and dismissal. The result is a discursive environment in which the past is not contested, but caricatured, and cultural forms are evaluated not in terms of internal coherence or historical significance, but through their proximity to externally defined standards of modernity. This corresponds to what Arthur Angell Phillips described as ‘cultural cringe’, a condition in which a society assumes the inferiority of its own cultural production and seeks validation through imitation or external endorsement (Phillips, 1950).

 

What gives these phenomena their force in the Iranian context is not their isolated presence, but their mutual reinforcement. Xenophilia presupposes a diminished valuation of the self, while cultural self-contempt requires the foreign as its counterpoint. Together, they produce not tension, but closure; a closed circuit in which the external is continuously affirmed and the internal continuously devalued. The result is a derivative consciousness, a consciousness incapable of generating criteria of judgement from within, and within which even dissent is mediated through imported frameworks rather than internally generated ones.

 

This condition does not remain abstract. It is expressed in concrete political programmes advanced by identifiable actors. Proposals circulating within segments of the diasporic opposition, including those associated with Reza Pahlavi and affiliated networks, articulate the future of Iran through externally anchored frameworks. What appears as pragmatism or geopolitical realism is, on closer inspection, a displacement. The nation is no longer conceived as the primary site of political generation, but as a terrain upon which externally mediated solutions are enacted. This is not strategic engagement; it is reorientation, reorientation in which the criteria of political legitimacy are derived from compatibility with external interests, expectations, and structures of power.

 

This distinction requires precision in order to foreclose predictable misreadings. The argument is not directed against openness to the external, nor against the capacity for cultural adaptation that has long characterised Iranian society. Such capacity is neither incidental nor trivial. It reflects a historically embedded disposition towards engagement, one associated with figures such as Cyrus the Great and forms of governance grounded in accommodation rather than erasure. What is at issue is not this capacity, but its inversion. The problem emerges at the point where adaptation passes into erasure, and respect for other cultures becomes inseparable from the devaluation of one’s own. To identify xenophilia and cultural self-contempt as problems is therefore not to retreat into xenophobia; it is to insist on a distinction, a distinction between engagement and subordination, between participation and forfeiture.

 

This derivative mode of reasoning is not confined to marginal actors; it is reproduced through everyday communicative practices. Digital environments play a decisive role in this process. Visibility is contingent upon alignment with dominant narratives circulating through global media systems, such that positions resonant with external discourses are amplified, while internally grounded perspectives struggle to gain traction, not because of analytical weakness, but because they do not conform to prevailing regimes of recognition (Couldry and Hepp, 2017). This produces not deliberation, but simulation; a feedback mechanism in which the appearance of consensus is generated through repetition and visibility rather than argument.

 

At a deeper level, xenophilia and cultural self-contempt must be understood as responses to a crisis of authority. Where the state has forfeited credibility and historical narratives have been destabilised, the question of legitimate judgement becomes acute. In the absence of trusted internal referents, external actors and institutions are invested with an authority that exceeds their relevance. This is not rational recalibration; it is displacement, displacement in which the burden of judgement is outsourced rather than reconstituted.

 

It is at this juncture that the distinction between strategic alignment and psychological dependency must be drawn with precision. A political movement may engage external powers in pursuit of defined objectives without relinquishing autonomy. Xenophilia, however, precedes and exceeds such calculation. It shapes the very terms through which objectives are conceived and evaluated, rendering the subject susceptible to influence precisely because the ground of independent judgement has already been conceded.

 

The implications extend directly into the domain of political action. A public sphere structured by derivative consciousness does not sustain debate; it displaces it with alignment. Positions are adopted not because they emerge from grounded analysis of national conditions, but because they correspond to externally validated scripts. Disagreement is recoded as deviation, deviation from an externally defined norm, and the possibility of articulating an autonomous political project is correspondingly diminished.

 

To name this condition is not to moralise, but to clarify. Xenophilia and cultural self-contempt are not insults; they are diagnoses, diagnoses of a mode of being produced under specific historical and structural pressures. Yet their normalisation carries consequences that cannot be evaded. The judgement that follows is not optional: a society that persistently defers to external authority in evaluating its own condition relinquishes, in practice if not in rhetoric, the capacity to determine its own political trajectory.

 

 

From Derivative Consciousness to Treachery: The Threshold of Political Disintegration

If the preceding analysis has established xenophilia and cultural self-contempt as structuring conditions of derivative consciousness, what must now be confronted is the threshold at which this condition passes from orientation into action. This is not a matter of rhetorical escalation, nor of moral denunciation. It is a question of definition. Treachery, in this context, does not name dissent, nor does it collapse into opposition, however radical. It names a limit condition, a point at which the displacement of political judgement becomes operative in a form that can no longer be reconciled with the minimal requirements of national obligation.

 

This distinction is not optional; it is constitutive. A political actor may reject a state, oppose a regime, or seek structural transformation without forfeiting the ground of political responsibility. Such positions, however contested, remain intelligible within a horizon in which the nation persists as the primary locus of agency. Treachery emerges precisely at the point where this horizon is relinquished. What appears as opposition becomes, on closer inspection, reorientation; reorientation in which the authority to determine political outcomes is no longer located within the national body, but is deferred to external actors whose interests, calculations, and modes of intervention are neither derived from nor accountable to it.

 

The movement that produces this threshold is not abrupt. It follows a discernible logic. Xenophilia, as a disordered attachment that endows the external with a priori legitimacy, combines with cultural self-contempt, which renders the internal suspect, to produce an erosion of judgement; judgement that is no longer exercised, but displaced. This erosion does not remain abstract. It generates an externalisation of agency, a condition in which political possibility is increasingly imagined as contingent upon forces beyond the nation itself. At this point, the decisive shift occurs. What was previously unthinkable becomes conceivable; what is conceivable becomes defensible. Appeals to foreign intervention, including forms of violence enacted in the name of liberation, no longer appear as contradictions, but as logical extensions of a prior displacement.

 

This is not simply error; it is a structural transition. To call for external force against one’s own country is not merely to adopt a controversial position within a shared political field; it is to exit that field. It is to reconstitute the terms of political action in such a way that the nation is no longer the subject of transformation, but its object. What is presented as necessity is, in fact, abdication; abdication of agency that recasts dependency as strategy and subordination as realism. At this threshold, the distinction between critique and complicity is not blurred; it is dissolved.

 

To name this condition as treachery is therefore not to moralise, but to clarify. It is to identify the point at which derivative consciousness, having displaced the grounds of autonomous judgement, produces forms of action that cannot be contained within the language of opposition. The term does not extend indiscriminately. It applies with precision to those positions in which the external is authorised to determine the fate of the internal, and in which the destruction or coercion of the nation is rendered intelligible as a condition of its redemption. Beyond this point, the vocabulary of dissent is no longer adequate. What remains is a form of political conduct that must be recognised for what it is: the culmination of estrangement in the form of active alignment against the very ground from which political responsibility is derived.

 

 

The Logic of Dependency: A Warning Against Becoming a Satellite

What follows from the preceding analysis is not speculative caution; it is a structural warning. A political community that normalises xenophilic attachment and internalises cultural self-contempt does not merely weaken itself in abstract terms. It relinquishes, progressively and decisively, the capacity to act as an autonomous subject in history. This is not a contingent risk; it is a structural consequence. Any future project of national reconstruction becomes dependent on forces that neither originate within the nation nor remain accountable to it.

 

This trajectory is neither novel nor specific to Iran. Historical experience demonstrates with consistency that societies which lose confidence in their own capacity for judgement seek orientation through alignment with more powerful external actors. Such alignment does not secure sovereignty; it undermines it. What is presented as necessity becomes subordination, subordination that is rationalised as realism, or even moral clarity. What distinguishes the present Iranian condition is not the existence of this logic, but the extent to which it has been internalised. Dependency is no longer experienced as constraint; it is recoded as strategy.

 

It is precisely this condition that George Washington identified, in a different historical conjuncture, with a clarity that remains structurally instructive:

 

‘So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favourite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favourite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld. And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favourite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation. As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent patriot. How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practise the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the public councils. Such an attachment of a small or weak towards a great and powerful nation dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter’ (Washington, 1796).

 

The force of this warning lies not in its historical origin, but in its structural precision. The displacement of judgement from the internal to the external does not remain confined to rhetoric. It extends into the architecture of decision-making itself. Interests are redefined, alliances are naturalised, and conflicts are inherited rather than chosen. This is not an accidental blurring; it is a structural erosion. The boundary between national interest and external agenda is not openly erased, but rendered indistinct because the criteria by which it might be drawn have already been surrendered.

 

This displacement has not remained latent; it has assumed programmatic form. Within segments of the opposition, external force is explicitly framed as the necessary condition of political transformation. What is termed ‘external liberation’ is not a descriptive label; it is a declaration of dependency. It proceeds from the assertion that the internal condition of the Iranian state is irredeemable by domestic means, and that meaningful change must therefore be initiated through external intervention. In some formulations, this extends to the prospect of foreign military action. This is not strategy; it is abdication, abdication of agency that relocates political legitimacy beyond the nation itself. The discourse associated with Farshgard exemplifies this trajectory, where scenarios of foreign-led intervention are entertained not as aberrations, but as logical conclusions of a dependency dynamic in which alignment is recoded as necessity while its implications for sovereignty are systematically displaced (Suren-Pahlav, 2016).

 

For Iran, the implications are neither abstract nor deferred. A society that emerges from the collapse of the Islamic regime, yet remains structured by xenophilic attachment and cultural self-contempt, will not enter a phase of autonomous reconstruction. It will confront fragmentation, fragmentation structured by competing external alignments. Factions will seek legitimacy not through internal grounding, but through association with different external powers. Each will present its dependency as necessity; each will contribute to the erosion of any coherent national project. What is imagined as a ‘post-regime transition’ risks becoming not the end of dependency, but its reconfiguration.

 

At this juncture, optimism ceases to function as orientation; it becomes obstruction. The assumption that the removal of an authoritarian state will restore the conditions for national coherence is not simply naive; it is analytically flawed. It overlooks the extent to which those conditions have already been compromised at the level of consciousness. Institutions may be dismantled; habits of thought persist. To ignore this distinction is not merely error; it is repetition, repetition of the very condition under analysis.

 

The warning is therefore not directed at a single faction. It is directed at a mode of reasoning that has assumed the status of common sense. So long as the foreign is treated as the ultimate arbiter of legitimacy, and the national as a site of deficiency requiring external correction, the recovery of an autonomous political horizon remains foreclosed. This is not an argument against engagement with the world; it is an argument against subordination to it.

 

A nation does not become a satellite at the moment of formal alignment. It becomes a satellite at the point where it ceases to recognise itself as the primary locus of political meaning. By that measure, the danger is not hypothetical; it is present. It is embedded in the ways reality is interpreted, alliances are imagined, and political futures are narrated. The judgement that follows is not optional: to ignore this condition is not neutrality; it is complicity in the continuation of estrangement by other means.

 

 

Conclusion

The analysis advanced here leads to a conclusion that cannot be deferred without evasion. What has been described as xenophilia and cultural self-contempt is not an incidental feature of the contemporary Iranian condition; it is a structuring logic that reorganises the terms under which political judgement is exercised. It is often claimed that alignment with external actors reflects strategic necessity, yet this cannot be sustained. What appears as strategy is, on closer inspection, a prior surrender; a surrender of the criteria by which strategy itself might be evaluated.

 

This is not simply a matter of misjudgement; it is a failure of orientation. A political community that ceases to recognise itself as the primary locus of meaning does not merely risk dependency; it produces it. The convergence identified throughout this analysis – between a regime that displaces national identity and an opposition that relocates legitimacy beyond it – is therefore not paradoxical. It is coherent. Both operate, through different mechanisms, to the same effect: the externalisation of agency and the erosion of autonomous political judgement.

 

The implications are neither abstract nor deferred. A post-regime transition, if structured by the same derivative consciousness, will not yield reconstruction. It will reproduce dependency in altered form; dependency that is redistributed across competing external alignments, each claiming necessity, each deepening fragmentation. What is presented as liberation under such conditions is not liberation at all; it is the continuation of subordination by other means.

 

At the level of political practice, this demands a clarification that cannot be avoided. To call for foreign intervention in the name of national salvation is not merely a controversial position; it is a declaration of incapacity. It does not extend the horizon of political possibility; it forecloses it. This is not an instance of excessive rhetoric, but a threshold; a threshold at which opposition passes into treachery, understood not as invective but as a condition in which political agency is externalised and the nation is recast as the object of forces acting upon it. What appears as liberation becomes, in this precise sense, alignment against the very ground from which political responsibility is derived.

 

To state this is not to advocate isolation, nor to deny the necessity of engagement with the external world. Such a reading would be superficial. The distinction that must be preserved is more exacting: not between engagement and withdrawal, but between engagement and subordination. Where this distinction collapses, sovereignty is not negotiated; it is relinquished.

 

The judgement that follows is therefore not optional. A society that persistently defers its political agency to external actors, whether through ideological displacement or internalised dependency, does not stand on the threshold of liberation. It stands within a structure of reproduced subordination; a structure in which the conditions of treachery are not exceptional, but systematically reproduced. And unless this condition is named, confronted, and reversed, what is imagined as political transformation will remain confined within the limits of that structure.
