At the apex of this hierarchy stands a specific group: the ‘Seyyeds’ (سیّد), individuals claiming descent from the Muslims’ Prophet Muhammad through his daughter Fatimah and her husband Ali ibn Abi Talib.

 

This lineage, far from being a mere point of pride, confers tangible and institutionalised discrimination, elevating Seyyeds above other Iranians both symbolically and practically. The state's active role in enabling and recognising this distinction, coupled with its systemic elevation, constitutes more than religious preference; it forms a distinct system of religious apartheid with profound racial and civilisational undertones, rooted in a history of conquest and enforced subordination.

 

 

An Imported Hierarchy: Legacy of Conquest

To understand the Seyyed privilege, one must confront Iran's pre-Islamic past.

 

Prior to the Arab conquests of the 7th century CE, Iran (Persia) was a formidable Zoroastrian civilisation with millennia of its own religious, cultural, and imperial traditions. It privileges the descendants of foreign invaders while systematically marginalising the indigenous Iranic nation, whose ancestors endured conquest and forced conversion.

The 1979 so-called Islamic Revolution solidified this imported hierarchy into the fabric of the modern Iranian nation. Grounded in Twelver Shi’a doctrine, the regime enshrined the veneration of the Muhammad's family (Ahl al-Bayt), positioning Seyyeds as the living embodiment of this alleged divine line. Crucially, the regime actively reversed pre-revolutionary law to enable Seyyed distinction. • Social Reverence: Seyyeds are presumed morally superior, accorded notable deference in public life, and often expected to use their honorific title. This social stratification based on blood descent permeates daily interactions and cultural norms.

• Pursue Social & Financial Advantage: Crucially, the exploitation extends beyond the corridors of power. Recognising the tangible benefits conferred by the title, enhanced social prestige, moral authority, and access to networks, many Seyyeds actively assert and flaunt their status for personal gain. This includes prominently using the 'Seyyed' prefix on social media profiles, in business dealings, and in community interactions, leveraging the state-enabled distinction for social climbing, financial opportunities, and preferential treatment. This voluntary embrace and instrumentalisation of their privileged lineage reveals a deeper mentality: many Seyyeds, like the regime that empowers them, view their status as an inherited right to extract advantage. They effectively treat Iran as war booty, a conquered territory and populace from which they, as the privileged descendants of the conquerors, are entitled to extract social capital, financial benefit, and deference. This attitude perpetuates the subjugation mindset of the original Arab invasion.

 

This systematic exploitation represents a profound subversion of Iran’s national identity. Iran is a predominantly non-Arab nation with an ancient civilisation boasting rich philosophies, literature (Ferdowsi's Shahnameh being a prime example of preserving pre-Islamic identity and resistance to Arab cultural dominance), and moral systems. Yet, its highest religious and political offices are dominated by individuals whose primary claim to authority rests on descent from a foreign empire that forcibly subjugated the ancestors of modern Iranians, a descent now uniquely sanctioned and recorded by the state. The Islamic Regime thus perpetuates an ideological colonisation that began over 1,300 years ago. It prioritises Arab ancestry over Persian heritage, clerical lineage over civic virtue, and sectarian dogma over national dignity and self-determination. The active exploitation of Seyyed status by its bearers reinforces this colonial dynamic, treating the Iranian nation and its people not as citizens with equal rights, but as subjects to be managed and resources to be extracted by a privileged caste claiming divine and ancestral entitlement.

The institutionalised privilege of Seyyeds in Iran is not a benign religious tradition. It is the modern repackaging of imperial domination as spiritual hierarchy, actively facilitated by the state. It seamlessly combines religious apartheid with racial preference, elevating a small, predominantly Arab-descended extreme minority of six million over the Iranic majority of eighty million they claim to govern by a foreign divine right.

Crucially, the official designation 'Seyyed', which these individuals actively sought and utilised for preferential treatment, should remain permanently recorded on state documentation. This serves not as discrimination, but as a vital security measure: it provides a verifiable basis for excluding individuals who demonstrated allegiance to a discriminatory hierarchy based on foreign lineage from positions of power or influence in a future Iran.

 

Furthermore, to fundamentally dismantle the ideological foundations of this caste system and correct the historical record embedded in state bureaucracy, future birth certificates issued by a post-theocratic Iranian state should replace the privileged religious title 'Seyyed' with the accurate, secular descriptor 'Foreign Descent.'
