This political strategy, carefully constructed by state security services, has served to neutralise genuine dissent, erode public trust, and ensure the continued monopoly on power. The Soviet Union, particularly under Stalin, mastered this art. Today, those same tactics find unsettling resonance in the Islamic regime in Iran, which has not only inherited the spirit of this Machiavellian logic but actively seeks to replicate the Soviets’ mechanisms in the modern age.

 

 

Symbolism, Sacrifice, and the National Struggle

It is worth pausing to acknowledge the heavy burden borne by those who continue to resist theocratic despotism in Iran. The arrival at a scene marked by the tricolour of the Iranian Lion and Sun flag, often a simple but profound symbol of resistance, has been paid for in blood, trauma, and relentless perseverance. This is not the result of chance, but the culmination of sacrifices made by those who have withstood betrayals from within and sabotage from without.

 

Such betrayal has often come in the form of individuals or factions masquerading as allies of progress, justice, or reform. These range from regime-aligned infiltrators to foreign-based opportunists who peddle hollow slogans, such as “change from within”, stripped of any revolutionary sincerity or national integrity. Many among the diaspora, particularly those ensconced in Western academic or policy circles, have, whether through naivety or design, served as apologists for the regime’s most cunning proxies. Funded conferences, op-eds in liberal media, and backdoor lobbying efforts are often couched in the language of cultural nuance or realpolitik, but the effect is the same: to undermine the urgency of regime change by presenting the Islamic regime as amenable to evolutionary reform. In doing so, they not only shield the regime from international pressure but also erode the morale of domestic resistance.

 

Most egregious, however, has been the persistent and deeply cynical presence of self-proclaimed “reformists” who, far from challenging the regime's ideological core, serve instead as its internal safety valve.

 

From segments of the diaspora to discredited leftist factions and the long-notorious terrorist groups such as Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), many actors have contributed, knowingly or otherwise, to the endurance of the regime. The result has been a steady erosion of political clarity, with genuine opposition subsumed beneath a tide of counterfeit movements. As in Soviet Russia, the cost has been counted not merely in political disappointment, but in lives lost and hopes deferred.

 

 

Lessons from the Soviet Playbook

The Soviet Union, particularly during the height of Stalinist repression, pioneered a deeply sophisticated system of internal manipulation. Through this system, the illusion of opposition was not only manufactured but also carefully controlled and weaponised. The intention was not merely to suppress dissent, but to hollow it out from within, to make the very concept of opposition synonymous with treachery, foreign conspiracy, or lunacy.

 

1. Orchestration of Fictitious Political Entities

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the Soviet regime constructed a variety of fictitious organisations purporting to represent dissenting voices. A prime example was the infamous Trust Operation, a Soviet counterintelligence effort that created a fake anti-Bolshevik group known as the “Monarchist Union of Central Russia”. Disguised as a legitimate resistance organisation, it was used to lure émigrés and foreign supporters into the arms of the Soviet secret police. Many of those ensnared were either executed or disappeared into the Gulag.

 

Such tactics were not random or incidental, they were integral to the regime’s strategic vision. The creation of fake opposition allowed the Soviets to project the illusion of pluralism while, in fact, maintaining complete control. It also enabled a pretext for purging genuine dissidents, both internally and abroad.

 

2. Propaganda and the Smearing of Real Opposition

Fake opposition groups also served a vital propagandistic function. By ensuring that these entities behaved in implausible, extremist, or grotesque ways, the regime could portray all dissent as inherently dangerous, unpatriotic, or counter-revolutionary. This blurred the line between authentic and manufactured resistance, rendering the population suspicious of any anti-regime narrative. The media, under full state control, played a crucial role in reinforcing this narrative framework.

 

3. Entrapment of Intellectuals and Activists

Academics, students, writers, and other members of the intelligentsia were frequently corralled into controlled environments, so-called “discussion circles” or “salons” sanctioned by the state. These groups gave the illusion of intellectual openness but functioned, in practice, as surveillance mechanisms, where every thought expressed could be recorded and later used as evidence against participants.

 

This same dynamic is evident in the Islamic regime’s treatment of its intellectual class, where numerous semi-official platforms for debate and reform are, in fact, highly monitored spaces designed to absorb, dilute, and ultimately stifle genuine political energy.

 

4. Theatre of Confession: The Show Trials

Perhaps the most infamous manifestation of the Soviet strategy was the series of show trials that gripped Moscow in the late 1930s. Public confessions, extracted under duress, torture, or threats to one’s family, were used to fabricate vast conspiracies involving supposed counter-revolutionaries and foreign spies. The primary function of these spectacles was not only to punish, but also to teach a lesson: to instil fear, showcase the state’s absolute power, and justify increasingly extensive purges.

 

While the Islamic regime has not replicated the spectacle of Stalin’s show trials in precise form, it has routinely coerced televised confessions from detainees, particularly political prisoners, to reinforce the narrative of external subversion. These rehearsed performances are intended to suggest that every act of defiance is foreign-backed, be it American, Zionist, or otherwise, and to deter others from following suit.

 

 

Contemporary Relevance: Iran and the Legacy of Deception

Despite their differing historical and ideological roots, the parallels between Stalinist Soviet methods and the Islamic regime’s internal security strategy are profound. Both systems rest on a triad of psychological and structural control: an information monopoly, institutionalised fear, and bureaucratic complexity. Yet, while the Soviet regime wielded near-absolute control over its society during its heyday, the Islamic regime finds itself in a far more precarious position.

 

Over three decades of pillaging, corruption, and mismanagement in every aspect of governance, from political to environmental, combined with cultural stagnation and popular disenchantment, have frayed the regime’s capacity to sustain total control. Consequently, its intelligence operations are increasingly reactive rather than strategic; its domestic propaganda struggles against the decentralised force of social media; and its ideological coherence is largely a relic of the past.

 

While the Islamic regime in Iran continues to deploy controlled opposition as a means of managing dissent within tolerable bounds, false opposition has emerged as a major instrument of diversion. These wholly fabricated factions or personalities, whether presented as radical reformists, dissident clerics, or revolutionary provocateurs, serve a specific function. They are manufactured precisely to confuse, entrap, or discredit legitimate voices of national resistance.

 

Their role is not merely to divide or distract, but to pollute the moral and political clarity of opposition itself, making it increasingly difficult for both domestic audiences and the international community to distinguish between real and staged dissent, all to divert the danger of collapse away from the regime.

 

In practical terms, these regime-aligned figures are permitted limited rhetorical divergence from the official line, enough to inspire hope or suggest plurality, but are firmly contained within ideological red lines. They do not, for instance, question the supremacy of the Supreme Leader, the constitutionality of Velāyat-e-Faqīh, or the authority of the Revolutionary Guard.

 

Their dissent is thus performative rather than transformative, an elaborate fiction carefully scripted to manage the tempo of discontent, and to ensure that the regime retains a monopoly on revolutionary credibility.

 

In some cases, these false oppositional figures are deliberately amplified by state-aligned media or are clandestinely supported abroad in order to sow further ambiguity. The resulting environment fosters suspicion, burnout, and fragmentation among activists. Such persistent ambiguity corrodes solidarity, making it increasingly difficult for activists to distinguish friend from foe, or conviction from calculation. In time, political trauma gives way to fatalism, wherein even those committed to change become paralysed by the fear that any movement may be another regime trap. The strategic purpose is not merely confusion, but exhaustion, to erode the very possibility of collective trust.

 

This mirrors the Soviet experience, wherein even the very idea of opposition became suspect, easily dismissed as contrived, compromised, or self-serving.

 

However, to underestimate the regime’s adaptability would be a grave error. Its leadership has demonstrated an enduring capacity to evolve repressive mechanisms in response to shifting threats. The strategic fabrication of opposition, whether through state-aligned pseudo-reformists, compromised exile groups, or manipulated protest narratives, remains a central pillar of its survival strategy.

 

 

Reformist Movement as a Regime-Engineered ‘False Opposition’

An increasingly prominent critique posits that the reformist movement in Iran has not functioned as a genuine vehicle for democratic transformation, but rather as a regime-engineered ‘false opposition’. According to this perspective, the reformists operate within strict parameters set by the Islamic regime, maintaining loyalty to the constitutional principle of Velāyat-e-Faqīh (Guardianship of the Jurist), the doctrine granting ultimate political authority to a senior Islamic jurist.

 

Far from presenting an existential challenge to the regime, these reformists are said to function as a calibrated release valve for public discontent. They are especially effective among the urban middle class, youth, and the intelligentsia. By absorbing and redirecting demands for fundamental change into controlled electoral and rhetorical channels, the reformist current helps to legitimise the political system both domestically and internationally. At the same time, it undermines more radical or revolutionary alternatives that seek to dismantle the Islamic regime in its entirety.

 

 

A System Without Sovereignty

While the regime expends great effort to present itself as a functioning republic, the reality is that its entire political structure is choreographed to sustain clerical hegemony. The notion of democratic participation is, in essence, a carefully managed illusion. The Supreme Leader, the regime’s highest authority, is not elected by the people but appointed by the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body whose members themselves are not freely or genuinely elected. Rather, they are pre-approved through ideological vetting, ensuring unwavering loyalty to theocratic rule.

 

There is no genuine multiparty system in Iran. Political parties, if permitted at all, must operate within strict boundaries dictated by the regime, and any attempt to establish independent or oppositional parties is swiftly quashed. Moreover, all candidates seeking public office, whether parliamentary or presidential, must first pass through the regime’s ideological filter: the Guardian Council, an unelected body that routinely disqualifies any figure deemed insufficiently loyal to the Islamic regime’s core principles.

 

The result is not a competitive political landscape, but a stage-managed theatre of participation, designed to mimic democratic form while nullifying its substance. Elections under such conditions do not represent the will of the people; they serve instead to legitimise authoritarian control under the pretence of popular sovereignty.

 

 

Manufactured Legitimacy and the Green Movement

Critics underscore the biographical backgrounds of leading reformist figures, many of whom were themselves architects or loyal operatives of the post-revolutionary state during its most repressive phases. Their historical complicity, combined with their consistent refusal to challenge the supremacy of clerical rule, raises serious doubts about the authenticity of their oppositional stance.

 

The theory of reformism as a ‘false opposition’ gained further traction in the aftermath of the 2009 Green Movement, when reformist leaders were seen by many as retreating from the popular uprising and discouraging sustained resistance, despite widespread electoral fraud and state violence. The Green Movement, which emerged in 2009 as a response to egregious electoral fraud, initially galvanised millions of Iranians across socioeconomic lines, students, professionals, clerics, and workers, around the demand for basic civil liberties and political accountability. Yet, in the critical weeks that followed the regime’s brutal suppression, the conspicuous reticence of its purported leaders, Mousavi and Karroubi, proved decisive. Rather than mobilising the demonstrators towards a sustained civil resistance, they advocated a return to ‘legal frameworks’ and electoral avenues already discredited by the regime’s own machinations. Their posture, far from revolutionary, was one of tactical retreat cloaked in the rhetoric of civic responsibility.

 

For detractors, this behaviour exemplified the movement’s ultimate function: to preserve the regime by forestalling its collapse at the hands of forces demanding wholesale systemic change, including secularists, republicans, federalists, and others who categorically reject Velāyat-e-Faqīh as incompatible with modern democratic governance.

 

In this light, Iran’s reformist current may be viewed less as a bridge to democracy and more as a barrier to regime change, strategically positioned to fragment opposition and extend the Islamic regime’s longevity under the guise of gradual reform.

 

 

A Façade of Pluralism, A Machinery of Control

The strategic function of Iran’s reformist movement, therefore, cannot be understood in isolation from the regime’s broader apparatus of political theatre. These controlled figures, often marketed as vehicles for incremental change, are not merely tolerated by the state but, in many cases, deployed as instruments of its survival. By maintaining a façade of pluralism and controlled dissent, the regime is able to deflect both domestic unrest and international scrutiny. Within this framework, the boundary between dissident and collaborator becomes increasingly opaque, especially when apparent opponents are themselves products of the Islamic regime’s inner sanctum. This ambiguity is nowhere more evident than in the highly publicised and politically instrumentalised recent cases of Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi.

 

 

The Myth of House Arrest and the Strategy of Limbo

A particularly revealing example of the regime’s strategy of managed dissent lies in the recently so-called “house arrest” of Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, two central figures in the Green Movement. Far from representing genuine suppression, this orchestrated confinement appears, in retrospect, as a tactical manoeuvre to sustain the illusion of resistance while ensuring it remains firmly under regime control. The arrest, highly publicised yet curiously lenient, served multiple objectives: to provoke sympathy, consolidate Mousavi’s image as a reformist martyr, and offer the population a symbolic, but ultimately hollow, focal point for hope.

 

In effect, the Islamic regime succeeded in keeping a considerable segment of the nation psychologically suspended, in a state of political limbo, fuelled by the belief that a moderate saviour awaited release at a decisive moment. It is not implausible to conclude that such figures are being preserved, not persecuted, for potential redeployment should the regime face existential crisis. in fact, given the regime’s documented history of eliminating real threats with ruthless efficiency, the survival, let alone the prominence, of these individuals casts serious doubt over the sincerity of their “oppositional” status.

 

Mousavi, a man with religious fundamentalist convictions, brutally loyal to Khomeini’s reactionary thought, a man who time and time again openly endorsed the execution of political prisoners or anyone opposed the regime oppressive rule, particularly, during the most brutal phase of the Islamic regime’s consolidation of power, and who has never renounced the doctrine of Velāyat-e-Faqīh, cannot credibly be presented as a vehicle for democratic renewal. His strategic utility lies in his ability to appear as a compromise figure: Islamic in identity, critical in posture, and ultimately loyal in principle.

 

As such, his confinement serves less as a punishment and more as a form of political insurance, to be cashed in should the regime require a “national unity” figurehead to defuse revolutionary momentum in a moment of genuine crisis.

 

Conclusion

The tragedy of Iran today is not merely that it suffers under an authoritarian theocracy, but that its path to liberation is continually obstructed by illusions deliberately manufactured to frustrate and exhaust. As with Stalin’s Russia, the use of false opposition as a mechanism of control is not a marginal tactic but a core strategy. Recognising and unmasking these deceptive structures is essential for any genuine movement that seeks not merely to resist the regime, but to replace it with something altogether more humane, more transparent, and more free.
