Among these, the Islamic regime in Iran has proved particularly adept at deploying what may be termed a comparative fallacy, a flawed argumentative strategy wherein the failures of neighbouring states are invoked to legitimise repressive domestic governance.

 

The 'comparative fallacy', as used in this analysis, refers to the strategic deployment of selectively negative regional comparisons by authoritarian regimes to equate democratic aspirations with disorder, thereby discrediting internal calls for reform.

 

At the heart of this fallacy lies a simple but pernicious logic: by comparing itself to war-torn or fragmented states such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya, the Islamic regime positions its own authoritarian theocratic rule as a bulwark against chaos, sectarianism, and foreign domination. In doing so, it elides its own internal deficiencies, oppression, systemic corruption, economic mismanagement, political disenfranchisement, and the denial of fundamental human rights, including gender discrimination, by appealing to the relative “stability” it claims to provide.

 

This line of reasoning is regularly articulated in state-controlled media, speeches by clerical and military leaders, and even in diplomatic engagements. The message is clear: “Look what has happened to those who overthrew their regimes or invited foreign intervention. Is this what you want for Iran?” It is an emotionally charged narrative that capitalises on the traumas of regional collapse, effectively narrowing the possibility space for political imagination and regime change.

 

 

THE CASES EVOKED: COLLAPSE AND INTERVENTION

Afghanistan is frequently referenced as a cautionary tale. After four decades of foreign intervention and civil war, the country remains mired in economic crisis and political uncertainty under Taliban rule. The Islamic regime seizes upon this outcome to underscore the supposed folly of embracing Western models or aligning with foreign powers. It presents the American withdrawal not as a strategic failure of US policy, but as irrefutable proof that Western-backed governance cannot ensure sovereignty or dignity.

 

Iraq offers another example routinely instrumentalised by Islamic regime authorities. Since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, Iraq has struggled with sectarian violence, militia politics, and the periodic paralysis of its democratic institutions. While Iraq has technically held regular elections, Tehran portrays this post-invasion polity as inherently unstable and vulnerable to manipulation. Crucially, Islamic regime officials emphasise the presence of US military forces in Iraq as a sign of lost independence, a veiled contrast to Iran’s putative resistance model.

 

In the case of Iraq, a more nuanced appraisal reveals a complex interplay between democratic experimentation and systemic dysfunction. While post-2003 Iraq has in fact witnessed recurrent episodes of violence and political instability, it has also developed a functioning, if fragile, parliamentary democracy with periodic competitive elections, an active civil society, and a relatively free press, features largely absent in Iran. The Iraqi experience thus presents a paradox: the coexistence of formal democratic institutions with weak governance structures, sectarian entrenchment, and foreign influence. However, to conflate these challenges with inherent flaws in democratic governance is misleading. Many of Iraq’s difficulties are attributable not to the principle of pluralism itself but to the legacy of authoritarian rule, foreign occupation, and the failure of post-invasion reconstruction efforts. The Islamic regime’s rhetorical appropriation of Iraq’s tribulations obscures these historical and structural contingencies, framing Iraq’s democracy as inherently unstable rather than contextually burdened.

 

Syria, meanwhile, is invoked as a victim of foreign meddling and internal disintegration. The Assad regime’s survival, due in part to Iranian and Russian intervention, is framed as a vindication of Tehran’s anti-imperialist credentials. More subtly, Syria’s descent into civil war cannot be reduced to the consequences of domestic protest alone; the conflict has been shaped by the intersecting ambitions of regional and international actors, each seeking strategic influence under the guise of humanitarian or ideological motives.

 

Finally, Libya is cast as the epitome of Western intervention gone awry. Following the NATO-backed overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been plagued by factionalism, rival governments, and a collapsed security apparatus. Islamic regime narratives often draw a direct line from international humanitarian intervention to prolonged societal fragmentation, implying that any domestic protest movement which garners Western sympathy could invite a similar fate.

 

 

FROM CAUTIONARY TALES TO POLITICAL WEAPONRY

While these examples are grounded in genuine regional crises, the Islamic regime employs them in a highly selective and instrumental fashion. The comparative fallacy it deploys is not born of ignorance, but of political calculation. The regime does not seek an honest assessment of Iran’s governance relative to that of its neighbours; rather, it cherry-picks the worst outcomes of regional upheaval and presents them as the inevitable consequences of political pluralism or external engagement.

 

The fallacy lies in the false equivalence: that Iran must choose between autocracy and anarchy, between theocratic rule and foreign domination. This binary framing deliberately obscures alternative possibilities. A regime grounded in the rule of law, responsive institutions, and citizen participation need not be a prelude to collapse. in fact, numerous states beyond the region have undergone democratic transitions without descending into war or occupation. The Islamic regime, however, disallows such nuance in its official discourse.

 

Such a binary framing, autocracy or anarchy, deliberately occludes the historical record of states that have navigated democratic transitions with relative stability. Indonesia, following the fall of Suharto in 1998, undertook considerable political and institutional reforms, gradually consolidating a functioning democratic system despite its prior authoritarian legacy and deep societal divisions. Similarly, Tunisia’s post-2011 trajectory, while fraught with political volatility, nonetheless offers evidence of sustained civic engagement, institutional pluralism, and the possibility of negotiated reform. These cases, though imperfect, illustrate that democratic evolution need not culminate in fragmentation or foreign subjugation. To ignore such counterexamples is to engage in selective historicism, one which privileges fear over empirical complexity.

 

This strategy bears resemblance to what political theorist Giovanni Sartori warned against in his seminal essay, Concept Misformation in Comparative Politics (1970). Sartori critiqued the tendency to stretch concepts beyond their analytical validity when comparing dissimilar cases. Here, the Islamic regime stretches the category of ‘stability’ to encompass any regime that remains intact, regardless of how it governs or how much public consent it commands. Within the regime’s discourse, stability is decoupled from its normative associations with institutional legitimacy, societal trust, or legal predictability. Instead, it is narrowly equated with regime endurance, territorial integrity, and the absence of mass protest, regardless of the underlying political, social, or economic conditions. By conflating stability with mere survival, the regime obscures its own contribution to structural insecurity and political stagnation. Such rhetorical manoeuvring enables the regime to present any demand for change as inherently destabilising, thereby pathologising dissent and criminalising democratic aspiration.

What emerges, then, is a distinctly authoritarian use of comparative reasoning, one that transforms fear into a political instrument and historical tragedy into a mechanism of ideological containment.

Within this environment, criticism of the state is not only unwelcome but construed as dangerous. Opposition figures are portrayed as foreign proxies, whose actions risk plunging the nation into a Syrian- or Libyan-style collapse.

 

However, it is critical to underscore that such appeals are not signs of reformist vitality but rather serve as performative gestures within a tightly managed system. The so-called reformist movement functions not as a genuine opposition, but as a regime-sanctioned mechanism of political containment, designed to absorb dissent, fragment opposition, and ultimately delay the collapse of totalitarian rule. As I have argued elsewhere, these reformist actors operate under a false opposition framework, offering rhetorical difference without substantive divergence.

 

Therefore, such fear-based governance erodes political agency and stifles public deliberation. It reduces citizens to passive recipients of state protection, rather than active participants in shaping their collective future. It also infantilises the polity, insinuating that Iranians lack the maturity or competence to govern themselves democratically without descending into chaos.

 

While this narrative serves the regime’s interest in entrenching authoritarian control, it is important to acknowledge that its emotional resonance is not fabricated out of whole cloth. For many citizens, the spectre of foreign intervention and state collapse, witnessed in neighbouring societies, has generated a genuine fear of democratic instability. The regime's rhetoric thus exploits not only manufactured narratives but also deeply internalised regional traumas.

 

What lends this rhetorical strategy its potency is the uncomfortable reality that Western-led interventions have in fact devastated countries such as Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Afghanistan, leaving behind power vacuums, sectarian fragmentation, and institutional collapse. These outcomes, while not indictments of democratic governance per se, have furnished authoritarian regimes with a grim archive of cautionary examples. In the case of the Islamic regime, the legacy of Western expansionism has been opportunistically transformed into a tool of domestic repression, weaponising the failures of foreign-imposed democratisation to suppress internal reform.

 

Yet this fear is circular in nature: it is the regime’s own authoritarianism that renders the country vulnerable to external intervention. The historical record suggests that Western powers have frequently justified their military engagements by invoking humanitarian imperatives or the imperative to remove despotic regimes. Iran, governed by a theocratic elite that systematically violates human rights and stifles democratic participation, risks becoming the next iteration of this pattern, not in spite of its repression, but because of it. This partial congruence between state propaganda and popular anxiety enhances the persuasive power of the comparative fallacy.

 

This rhetorical strategy is by no means unique to the Islamic regime in Iran. Only through regime change at the hands of the Iranian nation, and the establishment of a national government grounded in democratic accountability and Iranian values, namely justice, equality, and the rule of law, can Iranians reclaim both their sovereignty and their dignity. Such a transition would not only neutralise the regime’s fear-based narrative, but also eliminate the very pretext upon which Western interventionism has historically been rationalised.

 

 

THE INVERSE FALLACY: MISPLACED OPTIMISM AMONG OPPOSITION DISCOURSES

This susceptibility is compounded by the influence of Persian-language broadcasters financed and directed by Western intelligence networks, most notably BBC Persian, Voice of America (VOA), and Radio Farda. They frequently dismiss regional tragedies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya as irrelevant or exceptional, and instead invoke post-war Japan and Germany as aspirational models. The suggestion is that occupation, under the right geopolitical circumstances, can yield liberal democracy and economic prosperity.

 

This line of reasoning constitutes a comparative fallacy in its own right, one that romanticises foreign-imposed transformation while disregarding the vast asymmetries in historical context, institutional development, geopolitical location, and the nature of external involvement. Germany and Japan were industrialised nation-states with existing bureaucratic infrastructures, defeated in a total war involving global powers, and subsequently reconstructed under the unique auspices of the Bretton Woods order and Cold War strategic imperatives. These cases bear little resemblance to the fragmented, postcolonial, and often ethnically divided societies that have suffered intervention in the Middle East.

 

In Iran’s case, however, the historical context is markedly different. Unlike many of its neighbours, Iran was never colonised, nor is it an ethnically fragmented society in the manner often portrayed. While the Iranian nation encompasses a rich tapestry of local languages and regional traditions, the overwhelming majority of its population belong to the broader Iranian ethno-linguistic continuum, an assertion supported by contemporary genetic studies, and share a unified historical consciousness and national identity. For over 2,500 years, Persian has functioned as the cultural and administrative lingua franca of the Iranian world, reinforcing a deep-rooted civilisational continuity.

 

Nonetheless, since the rise of the Islamic regime following the externally engineered Islamic Revolution of 1978, facilitated by covert cooperation among the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Israel, the regime has actively pursued a strategy of ‘divide and rule’ (Suren-Pahlav, 2010). It has deliberately encouraged linguistic and regional distinctions to be recast as 'ethnic identities' in a manner that undermines national cohesion. This policy has not only fragmented the national discourse, but has also created openings for foreign manipulation, as appears to have been intended.

 

In particular, intelligence services aligned with certain Western states and Israel have systematically sought to inflame grievances among these so-called ‘ethnic’ communities, not necessarily with the goal of regime change, but seemingly with the broader strategic aim of weakening or even dismembering Iran as a sovereign entity. These efforts, often cloaked in the language of human rights and decentralisation, do not advance democratic self-determination. Rather, they serve geopolitical agendas that prioritise regional destabilisation and imperial leverage over the long-term integrity and agency of the Iranian nation.

 

Therefore, by invoking these exceptional historical analogies, such opposition actors neglect the far more proximate and instructive examples of Western interventionism gone awry, outcomes that Iranians have observed not through abstraction but in real time, often across shared borders. Moreover, this narrative implicitly places the agency for transformation in the hands of foreign powers rather than the Iranian nation itself, thus perpetuating a dependency mindset that undermines both sovereignty and political self-determination.

 

In short, while the regime engages in fear-mongering to suppress reform, these opposing narratives rely on misplaced optimism to legitimise external salvation. Both employ flawed comparative frameworks that distort historical experience to advance ideological ends. A mature political discourse must reject these extremes and centre the Iranian nation as the primary agents of democratic transition, without illusions about benevolent empires or fatalistic surrender to autocracy.

 

While the Islamic regime has consistently deployed regional catastrophes as cautionary tales to suppress domestic dissent, another insidious discursive pattern has emerged, one which centres not on regional comparison, but on Iran’s own modern history. In particular, attempts to delegitimise democratic alternatives often rely on a strategic conflation of future possibilities with selectively maligned pasts. Here, the regime and its ideological satellites, including certain Western media outlets and opposition currents, engage in what might be termed ‘retrospective fallacy’: a misrepresentation of Iran’s pre-1979 political and social order, instrumentalised to foreclose the imaginative space for national renewal. This narrative move reframes any call for constitutional reform or democratic transition, particularly those articulated by HIH Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, as a mere revival of monarchical autocracy. Such distortions serve not only to vilify alternative leadership but also to reinforce the Islamic regime’s claim to singular historical legitimacy. They assert that any such vision is nothing more than a veiled attempt at monarchical restoration, functionally indistinguishable from the era of his father, the late His Imperial Highness Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. This manoeuvre constitutes yet another iteration of the comparative fallacy: a false equivalence that seeks to delegitimise forward-looking democratic agendas by collapsing them into a discredited historical past.

Gender equality, especially in political participation, advanced to the extent that Iranian women gained the right to vote before their Swiss counterparts, a historical fact that continues to challenge the regime’s narrative of inherited backwardness.

 

Moreover, the imperial state's modernising ethos was grounded not in demagoguery or populist spectacle, but in a technocratic framework prioritising institutional capacity, long-term planning, and developmental rationality. Critics may decry this model as elitist or insufficiently democratic, but it is difficult to dispute that it delivered levels of public service, social mobility, and infrastructural development that remain elusive in many advanced Western democracies. Consider, for instance, that the United Kingdom still operates under a feudal leasehold system structurally weighted in favour of entrenched landowners, an arrangement dismantled in Iran through the White Revolution decades ago.

 

The enduring relevance of these achievements lies not in the romanticisation of monarchy, but in the recognition that Iranian modernity was neither derivative of the West nor dependent upon it. To assert that a future democratic Iran must repudiate its imperial past wholesale is to succumb to historical amnesia. A truly post-theocratic vision must not simply discard its own indigenous institutional precedents, but must critically reclaim and refine those national traditions, most notably the 1906 Constitution and the Pahlavi developmental legacy, that gestured towards a modern, sovereign, and democratic order. To reject this heritage out of ideological expediency is to perpetuate the fallacy of discontinuity: the fiction that Iran’s future must be wholly severed from its modern past.

 

More insidiously, this rhetorical false equivalence has been weaponised by a broader coalition of actors, spanning Western political interests, Israeli regional security strategists, and elements within the Russian foreign policy apparatus, who remain united in one strategic aim: to ensure that the return of an Iranian constitutional state modelled on pre-1979 structures never materialises. The reasons for this are not abstract. A revived Iranian state, modernised, pluralistic, and sovereign, would pose a profound challenge to existing geopolitical alignments. To forestall this eventuality, these actors have found it expedient to amplify or tolerate distortions that collapse Iran’s imperial past into the realm of authoritarian anachronism. This too is a form of comparative fallacy, one that selectively juxtaposes Iran’s historical experience with that of contemporary Western liberal democracies, only to condemn the former by presentist standards it was never allowed to meet. The aim is not scholarly integrity, but strategic erasure. By decontextualising and delegitimising the imperial period, this coalition seeks to foreclose one of the few viable models for Iran’s democratic regeneration: a return not to monarchy per se, but to national continuity armed, this time, with democratic instruments.

Yet the more insidious danger lies not merely in rhetorical distortion, but in a widespread miscalculation among segments of the Iranian populace: the belief that political inaction, born of caution, can insulate the nation from foreign intervention or collapse. Many Iranians, understandably fearful of the fate of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Syria, have deferred revolutionary change in the hope of avoiding similar catastrophe. But such restraint, however well-meaning, is strategically misguided. It is not inaction that preserves Iran’s territorial integrity and independence, it is precisely inaction that imperils it.

 

The precedents are sobering. As seen in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, and as now looms in Syria, the pretext for foreign intervention is often manufactured under the guise of humanitarianism, preemption, or the defence of a specific ethnic or sectarian group. Syria’s nominal sovereignty, propped up by external actors, offers no durable alternative. That regime endurance offers no guarantee against fragmentation is a lesson Tehran appears determined to ignore.

 

If the Islamic regime continues on its present course, violating the rights of its citizens, eroding internal cohesion, and provoking regional isolation, it will invite the very scenario it claims to forestall. In this context, democratic transformation is not a utopian luxury but a geostrategic imperative. Only through the peaceful toppling of the theocratic order by the Iranian nation itself, and the establishment of a national democratic government grounded in justice, legal accountability, and Iranian civilisational values, can the country truly reclaim its sovereignty and forestall the spectre of foreign dismemberment.

 

The decision before the Iranian nation is stark. It is not a choice between stability and change, but between national regeneration and irreversible erosion. The regime’s survival strategy, based on fear and falsification, guarantees only decay. It is only through reclaiming political agency and dismantling both the architecture of fear and the machinery of historical distortion that Iranians can pre-empt internal collapse and external incursion. To delay is to surrender the future. To act is to shape it.
